Our Story

Our Story

Mountain West is a second-generation, family-owned group of dealerships serving the transportation, commercial equipment, golf, and grounds-care industries throughout the western United States. Through Mountain West Utility Trailer and Mountain West Power Equipment, we provide the equipment, parts, service, rentals, and support our customers need to keep their businesses moving.

Mountain West Utility Trailer operates eight strategically located dealerships in Salt Lake City and St. George, Utah; North Las Vegas, Nevada; Tolleson and Tucson, Arizona; Boise and Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Spokane, Washington. Located along major freight corridors, these dealerships serve the semi-trailer, transport refrigeration, vocational equipment, and yard truck industries.

Our history began in 1982 with the founding of Utility Trailer Sales of Utah, Inc. For more than four decades, the company built a reputation for dependable equipment, knowledgeable service, and long-term customer relationships. In 2020, the business became known as 1580 Utility Trailer, reflecting the location of its Salt Lake City headquarters near the intersection of Interstates 15 and 80.

Beginning in 2025, the Mountain West organization expanded across the region through the acquisition of established equipment dealerships in Idaho, Washington, and Arizona. This growth created a stronger regional network while preserving the local teams, industry knowledge, and customer relationships that made each business successful.

Mountain West later expanded into the commercial power equipment and golf cart industries through the acquisition of RMT Equipment. Today, the company operates as Mountain West Power Equipment, combining RMT Equipment’s established local reputation and experienced team with the resources and support of the Mountain West organization.

The transition from RMT Equipment to Mountain West Power Equipment represents more than a name change. It marks the next stage in the company’s growth while maintaining the knowledgeable service and customer relationships the business was built on. Customers can continue working with a team that understands their equipment, their industries, and the demands of keeping their operations productive.

Mountain West Power Equipment provides tractors, commercial lawn and grounds-care equipment, golf carts, utility vehicles, parts, and service. We proudly represent respected manufacturers such as KIOTI, Jacobsen, Grasshopper, E-Z-GO, Cushman, Smithco, and other leading equipment brands.

Our customers include golf courses, commercial landscapers, municipalities, property managers, agricultural operations, businesses, and homeowners. Whether a customer needs a tractor, a commercial mower, a golf cart, a utility vehicle, replacement parts, or dependable equipment service, our team is committed to helping them find the right solution.

While our name has changed and our organization has grown, our commitment remains the same. We are guided by a shared vision:

Keep America Moving, Exceed Expectations, and Deliver SMILEs.

Our decisions and relationships are guided by five core values represented by the acronym SMILE:

  • Serve
  • Move Forward
  • Industry Leader
  • Learn
  • Embrace Change

From helping a golf course maintain its grounds to supplying a business, municipality, or property owner with dependable equipment, our goal is to deliver a SMILE during every interaction.

Our History

1982

SLC Utility Dealership Under New Ownership.

1982 - 1985

Utility Trailer Sales of Utah (UTSU) struggles to be profitable, but within a few months, it is in the black and never looks back. Not long after, the dealership celebrates its first large fleet deal of 10 trailers!

1986 - 1999

UTSU purchases fax machines, personal computers, and later incorporates cellular phones. We are always early technology adopters.

1999 - 2016

UTSU makes a big gamble and moves to its current SLC location at 4970 W 2100 S on 20 acres. It has 20 service bays and a facility we couldn’t imagine filling at the time but quickly grows to utilize 100% of the facility.

1999 - 2016

UTSU enters the Southern Utah market with a parts-only facility in St. George, UT, and later a full-service facility in Las Vegas, NV.

2014 - 2020

The 2nd generation takes on management and begins a buyout of generation 1, later orchestrating the 1580 Utility Trailer rebrand and constantly striving to grow and improve the operation each day.

2023

1580 Utility Trailer becomes an authorized MAC Trailer dealer. This addition to our offering gives us another premium manufacturer of aluminum flatbed trailers, dump trailers, and various vocational trailers, making 1580 Utility Trailer a one-stop shop for nearly all semi-trailers.

2024

1580 Utility Trailer adds Cargobull North America Transport Refrigeration Units (TRUs) to its product offerings. The Utility Trailer Manufacturing network will serve as the exclusive dealer network for Cargobull TRUs in North America.

2025 - Present

Utility Trailer Sales of Idaho and Utility Trailer Sales Company of Arizona are acquired by 1580 Utility Trailer and all three companies are rolled under a new holding company, Mountain West Power Equipment, Inc. With 8 locations across 5 states, and every store adjacent to a major U.S. Interstate Freeway, we are well-positioned to serve the trucking industry!

Family Owned Business

We are proud to carry a large selection of new and pre-owned inventory.

When you are ready to invest in a new or pre-owned trailer, our friendly and knowledgeable sales, financing, service, and parts team members are prepared to assist in any way possible. We look forward to the opportunity to deliver a SMILE!

We’ve got the answers to your questions

Should I buy a new or pre-owned semi-trailer?

Buying a new or pre-owned semi-trailer has its advantages. Pre-owned trailers are generally more affordable both in terms of initial cost and operational expenses. New trailers often come with lower interest rates on financing, require less maintenance, and include a manufacturer’s warranty, providing peace of mind and long-term savings.

What is the difference between a semi-truck and a semi-trailer?

A semi-truck comprises two main parts: the tractor, which houses the engine, and the trailer, which carries the cargo. The tractor is detachable from the trailer, allowing it to operate independently. Semi-trailers vary in type including refrigerated, dry van, flatbed, and construction models, each designed for specific cargo needs.

What is the useful life of a semi-trailer?

With proper maintenance and care, semi-trailers can serve reliably for 15 to 20 years or more. Regular upkeep is essential to extend the lifespan of your trailer and ensure it remains roadworthy.

How much does a semi-trailer cost?

The price of semi-trailers varies significantly based on type, make, model, and specifications. For example, new refrigerated trailers may cost between $70,000 and $120,000, while dry van trailers typically range from $40,000 to $60,000. Financing options are available for all models to help manage the investment.

What is the difference between a semi-trailer and a utility trailer?

Semi-trailers are designed to haul heavy loads, typically between 42,000 and 48,000 pounds, depending on the trailer type. Utility trailers, also known as bumper pull trailers, are suited for lighter loads and can be towed by consumer vehicles, making them ideal for everyday use. It’s important to note that Utility, a prominent brand in the semi-trailer industry known for its high-quality semi-trailers, should not be confused with general utility or bumper trailers.

Which Reefer Unit is best?

The top Reefer Unit brands in North America are Carrier, Thermo King, and Cargobull North America. Carrier units are favored in the Eastern states, while Thermo King is preferred in the West. Cargobull North America offers premium reefer units known for their durability and longevity, standing out in the market for their quality.

What is a dry trailer called?

Dry trailers are referred to as Dry Van Semi Trailers. These are designed to transport dry goods and are available in two heights—14 feet and 13 feet 6 inches—to accommodate different cargo types. Unlike reefer trailers, dry vans are not insulated, allowing for maximum cargo space.

Is a reefer trailer better than a dry van trailer?

The choice between a reefer trailer and a dry van trailer depends on your cargo needs. Reefer trailers are essential for transporting perishable goods that require temperature control, such as food and pharmaceuticals. Dry van trailers are ideal for goods that do not need temperature regulation.
